The Department of Forensic Medicine was established in 2010. Forensic medicine is a branch of science which has a multidisciplinary structure in collaboration with other scientific branches within the framework of forensic medicine and forensic sciences.The fields of study are the assessment of all kinds of damage on the human body, injuries and deaths within the scope of the investigation of origin and cause.
The evaluation of violence in all forms is one of the most important fields of study of the forensic science. Child abuse, violence against women, domestic violence, elderly abuse, sexual violence and torture are the main areas of work for forensic medicine.
Additionally, the examination of traffic and work accidents especially in terms of disability, studies on origin and crime, investigations of murder and suicide cases (writing and signature comparison, document forgery) are also important areas of forensic medicine. Evaluating cases involving medical errors and the evaluation of cases in terms of judicial expertise are extremely important fields of forensic interest. School of Medicine students in the I, II, and V terms are taught theory. The 'forensic internship' prepared for the students of term V includes the theoretical courses as well as practical applications for the evaluation of autopsy and forensic cases.
The department aims for students to be aware of the legal responsibilities regarding their career, to identify forensic cases, to understand their responsibilities in forensic cases, and to have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to systematically prepare and present forensic reports to judicial authorities.
