Dr. Sinasi Can Medical Ethics Days 1: Ethics in Pandemic Symposium

The first of the Şinasi Can Acıbadem Kadıköy Hospital Medical Ethics Days Symposium 1 was organized with the theme of Ethics in Pandemic, in cooperation with Acıbadem Healthcare Group, Kadıköy Acıbadem Hospital and Acıbadem University, on December 10, 2022, The symposium was dedicated to the memory of Opr. Dr. Şinasi Can (1940 - 2020), the first chief physician of Acıbadem Kadıköy Hospital which was established in 1991. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Işıl Ülman emphasized from ethical point of view that pandemic management should be ethically governed by treatment of eery person with equality in line with human dignity and rights; all steps should clearly shared with the public with transparency and realism; quarantine and isolation should be proportionate and balanced with personal autonomuy and public health responsibility; coordination should be sought between people, hospitals and countries; governments should respond to the needs of the people with accountability and plurality; economic life should be supported by mutual cooperation and solidarity, and social determinants of health are to be taken into account. 

Dr. Nadi Bakırcı evaluated the approach to the pandemic in terms of public health in a global and local context. Prof. Dr. Sesin Kocagöz, Prof. Dr. Lütfi Telci, Prof. Dr. Serap Şimşek Yavuz, Prof. Dr. Serdar Özgen discussed clinical and patient experiences in combating the pandemic with examples from their fields of expertise. Assoc. Dr. Barış Parkan approached the pandemic from a philosophical perspective. The evidence-based approach in the fight against the pandemic, the committment to ethical values, the life-saving function of vaccines were emphasized by the speakers.
