To Be or Not to Be at the Workplace: Presenteeism

The inaugural seminar of the Social Sciences Institute of Acıbadem University, titled "To Be or Not to Be at the Workplace: Presenteeism," took place at our university on December 12, 2023. The event focused on the concept of 'Presenteeism,' a phenomenon where individuals who are not in a condition to work are obliged to be present at the workplace, negatively impacting individual behaviors. Assist. Prof. Şafak Öz Aktepe, a faculty member of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Psychology, was the speaker at the event. Discussions encompassed factors influencing employees' decisions regarding presenteeism, the effects of presenteeism behavior on employees and organizations, and contemporary approaches to the concept of presenteeism. It was highlighted that job security, a healthy organizational culture, an open communication climate, and policies and practices that value employees are prominent, robust structural resources in managing presenteeism. The seminar, attended by 20 people, ended after the  question-and-answer session.
