ACU Social Talks I: Metaphysics in Science Fiction

The first ACU Social Talks event took place with a fascinating discussion on the intersection of metaphysics and science fiction, titled "Metaphysics in Science Fiction: Star Wars." Held on May 4, 2023, which happens to be Star Wars day, the event was organized by the Internal Communication Commission of our university to foster idea sharing on thought-provoking social issues.

The featured speaker was Prof. Ata Akın, a Biomedical Engineering faculty member who has spent the last 25 years devoted to brain research and harbors a curiosity for metaphysical inquiries related to thought. Drawing on his hobby of exploring the relationships between consciousness, existence, free will, and neuroscience, Professor Dr. Akın posited that metaphysical elements are commonly found in science fiction films.

As he explained in his presentation, fundamental philosophical questions regarding the nature of humans, their place in the universe, the nature of consciousness, and the existence of free will have been compelling and ubiquitous themes in science fiction films. He cited examples from popular films like Star Trek, Star Wars, Terminator, Matrix, and Ex Machina to illustrate the ways in which science fiction can explore these themes in exciting and thought-provoking ways. Attendees included our academic and administrative staff.
