Histology and Embryology

The Department of Histology and Embryology was founded in 2009. The department teaches General and Special Histology and Embryology courses to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Faculty of Medicine undergraduate students while teaching Cardiovascular System Histology and Embryology in the Dialysis and Perfusion programs taught at the Vocational School of Health Services.

The department faculty members also act as guides for problem based learning (PBL) modules in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of School of Medicine. Scientific research topics in the department of Histology and Embryology are as follows: The effect of various protective agents in experimental damage models of the gastrointestinal system and the urogenital system; Biomaterials; Tissue Engineering; Cell culture (Mesenchymal stem cell isolation and culture, Nerve stem cell culture, Stem cell differentiation).

In multidisciplinary laboratories, multidisciplinary studies are carried out with light (histochemistry-immunohistochemistry), confocal, permeable and scanning electron microscopes in conjunction with basic medical sciences and clinical medical sciences. The laboratories are equipped with confocal microscopes, two fluorescent microscopes (upright and inverted), stereomicroscopes and two photomicroscopes. Two cell culture chambers are available with 4 laminar flow contents for cell culture studies. Additionally, lyophilizers and electrospinning devices are available for biomolecule studies.
