The “Symposium on Multidisciplinary Approach to the Aging Spine”, organized in collaboration with the Department of Nursing at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Acıbadem Health Group Maslak Hospital, and the Acıbadem Maslak Spine Health Center, was held on October 31, 2025, at the Dr. Özlem Cankurtaran Conference Hall, Acıbadem Maslak Hospital.
The symposium focused on the management of surgical processes in the aging spine, the coordination of nursing care, and the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach. The aim of the event was to share up-to-date knowledge and experiences that contribute to improving patients’ quality of life by providing a holistic perspective on surgical and care processes in the aging spine.
Distinguished speakers from the fields of spine health and surgery, including Prof. Dr. Ahmet Alanay, Prof. Dr. Fatma Yasemin Kutlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Altuğ Yücekul, Physiotherapist Sema Çetin, and Nurse Sena Akkaya Öztürk, participated in the program.
The symposium covered a wide range of topics, such as “Management of Surgical Processes in the Aging Spine”, “Management of Care in the Aging Spine”, “Overcoming Cultural Barriers in Multidisciplinary Approaches”, “Functional Changes in the Aging Spine and Reflections on Rehabilitation”, and “Holistic Care in Spine Surgery and Improving Quality of Life.”
Throughout the sessions, the role of nursing care in each stage of the surgical process and the importance of teamwork in ensuring patient safety were emphasized. Speakers highlighted the need to overcome professional and cultural barriers within multidisciplinary approaches and shared experiences demonstrating how establishing a common professional language positively affects patient outcomes. The significance of considering patients’ psychosocial as well as physical needs, and the impact of a holistic approach on improving the quality of care, were also discussed through practical examples.
In the final session, a “Multidisciplinary Experience Sharing” panel enriched by patient participation took place. The patient care process was evaluated from different professional perspectives, focusing on the influence of team communication and patient interaction on clinical decision-making.
With 95 participants in attendance, the symposium concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers.
