The “Trip to Edirne,” organized by the Social and Scientific Activities Committee of the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, was held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, with the participation of faculty members and students from the Department of Nursing. A total of 74 participants attended the trip, which was organized as part of the department’s annual academic calendar.

The visit was planned to provide students with the opportunity to examine the history of Turkish-Islamic medicine on site, enhance their awareness of the history of medicine and cultural heritage, and contribute to nursing education. The program began at 6:30 a.m. with departure from the university campus.

The group’s first stop was the historic Karaağaç neighborhood of Edirne. Following a breakfast break in the district, participants visited the Lausanne Monument, where a brief discussion was held regarding a critical period in the history of the Republic and the significance of the Treaty of Lausanne.

One of the most academically significant parts of the trip was the visit to the Bayezid II Mosque and Complex and the Health Museum located within the complex. Built in the 15th century and home to one of the most important Ottoman hospitals of its time, the complex provided nursing students with valuable insight into the historical development of Turkish-Islamic medicine, patient care practices, and healthcare services. Participants closely examined the medical instruments, treatment methods, and architectural design exhibited in the museum.

The trip concluded with a visit to the Selimiye Mosque and Complex, regarded as a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Through its artistic and architectural features, the site offered participants a valuable perspective on cultural heritage.

The group departed from Edirne at 5:30 p.m. and arrived in Istanbul at 9:00 p.m. The trip was considered highly productive in reinforcing nursing students’ awareness of the history of medicine and cultural heritage, providing firsthand exposure to the Turkish-Islamic medical tradition, and enriching the department’s academic activities.
