The Brain Bee competition, organized for high school students interested in neuroscience and held for the second time in Turkey this year, took place on June 14, 2025, hosted by our university.
Known internationally as the International Brain Bee, the competition is organized worldwide in collaboration with the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO). It offers high school students interested in neuroscience the opportunity to test and expand their knowledge.
This year’s competition was held simultaneously in four different cities: at the central exam location on our university campus and in exam centers in Ankara, Diyarbakır, and Kocaeli. The questions, prepared by our university’s faculty members Dr. Mehmet Ergen (School of Medicine – Department of Physiology) and Dr. Bernis Sütçübaşı (Department of Psychology), allowed participants to demonstrate their knowledge and competencies in the categories of human neuroanatomy, neurohistology, and patient diagnosis. Students from our university’s Neuroscience Club also played an active role in organizing the event.
The competition jury consisted of the following members:
Dr. Mehmet Ergen (Istanbul)
Dr. Bernis Sütçübaşı (Istanbul)
Prof. Dr. Nursu Çakın-Memik (Kocaeli)
Dr. Sevda Keskin-Akman (Ankara)
Dr. Ufuk Özer (Diyarbakır)
In the final stage of the competition, a live evaluation session was conducted via video conference with the top student from each exam center. As a result of the evaluation, Asya Irmak Usta from the Kocaeli center was selected as the winner and earned the right to represent Turkey in the international finals to be held in the United States. Gölgem Göbel from Istanbul placed second, and Ada İncedoğan from Diyarbakır placed third.
