A study conducted under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Güralp Ceyhan, Faculty Member of Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery and President of the European Pancreas Association, in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has been published in Cancer Cell, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals.
The research team from Acıbadem University included Saliha Elif Yıldızhan (Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics), Prof. Dr. İhsan Ekin Demir (Visiting Faculty Member), Prof. Dr. Osman Uğur Sezerman (Department of Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics), Asst. Prof. Dr. Didem Karakaş (Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Medical Biotechnology), and Nedim Can Çevik (Pancreatic Cancer Research Group).
The article published in Cancer Cell appeared under the title: “Sensory neurons drive pancreatic cancer progression through glutamatergic neuron-cancer pseudo-synapses.” The study revealed that interactions between nerve cells and pancreatic cancer cells play a decisive role in both the progression of cancer and its recurrence. In particular, it was demonstrated that these interactions, occurring through glutamatergic neuron-cancer pseudo-synapses, increase tumor aggressiveness.
With an impact factor of 44.5, Cancer Cell is considered, alongside Cell, one of the most prestigious journals in the field of cancer research. This article marks Prof. Dr. Güralp Ceyhan’s second publication in Cancer Cell. While the first study in 2020 was based solely on research conducted at TUM, this time the collaboration, enriched by contributions from Acıbadem University, achieved significant success in the international scientific community.
