Drugs used in the treatment of rare diseases are called “Orphan Drugs” since they will reach few individuals and the development process of a drug will be difficult, long, costly and relatively low in market share. It is known that some pharmaceutical companies tend to produce orphan drugs with the aim of improving the quality of life of patients and prolonging their lives and with social responsibility awareness, but this effort is unfortunately not sufficient.

There is no orphan drug status in our country. Orphan drugs are involved in normal licensing and reimbursement processes in the same way as other drugs. Almost all orphan drugs are manufactured abroad in Turkey. The non-licensed orphan drugs can be delivered to patients in Turkey through the Turkish Pharmacists' Association.
